Indoor Air Quality and Energy Conservation are interdependent.
Properly designed energy efficient home has comfortable temperature, low humidity and good air quality. A good, responsible designer makes this a priority and will include its details in the Design Statement.
Indoor air quality is important, because we spend at least 80% of our time indoors.
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) influences occupant's health. EPA 2012 indicates that indoor air can actually be more polluted than outdoor air. The indoor air pollutants can accumulate to levels high enough to cause health and comfort issues.
A good designer understand, and alert to the hidden dangers some products brought into the home could cause. Furniture, appliances, carpet, paint, and many other sources could release pollutants like VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). Designing responsibly means caring to know and investigate the manufacturer beyond the cost and aesthetics of a product.
Improper ventilation practices can also worsen the indoor air quality problems and increase the home's energy consumption.
A good designer understands and specify the right size products for the space and client's user preference.
Energy efficient homes use less energy and cost less to operate and produce fewer greenhouse gases.
To achieve both energy efficiency and healthy indoor air quality, the building construction and technology must be correctly designed. Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans and tight building envelop will not only protect /remove excessive moisture and cooking hazards (more on my previous blog: www.sipgreen.org/blog/kitchencooking-as-an-indoor-air-pollution-hazard), but will also ensure outdoor pollutants can't enter, and provide proper home maintenance by controlled ventilation.

- people with chronic conditions such as lung and heart problems like asthma, emphysema and bronchitis
Energy efficiency contributes in fighting climate chage:
- reduce greenhouse gas emission
- reduce local air pollutants
- increase comfort
- lower household energy bills
- supports green economy and technology by the use of producers leading in energy and water efficiency
- results in higher GDP and profits
